tdg (the digital guestbook)

tdg and its predecessor, the original Digital Guestbook, have been downloaded over 1 million times to date (February 2003). Their combined downloads make tdg one of the most widely used guestbooks in the world.

signing the guestbook...
  • one of the most advanced and comprehensive guestbooks available
  • based on a GDBM database for speed and efficiency
  • sends e-mail notifications to the webmaster when entries are added (optional)
  • converts "smileys" to animated icons
  • real-time censorship of vulgarities against an adjustable database (optional)
  • allows user to preview their entry prior to submission
  • automatically converts URL's and e-mail addresses to hyperlinks
  • dynamic display: user selects number of entries to display on each page
  • powerful guestbook navigation - access any page or record directly
  • keyword search facility
  • administration module for database maintenance (providing edit and delete controls for guestbook entries)
  • all configuration performed in the web-browser (no "config" file to manually edit)
  • customisable output via page templates and configuration panel
  • totally portable database (move from one host to another without compromising the guestbook)
  • comprehensive error trapping and reporting
  • NT / Unix Compatible

tdg: the digital guestbook

The amazing success of The Digital Guestbook v1.0 (now known as "the original Digital Guestbook"), combined with hundreds of suggestions for improvements from its users, has prompted us to develop a new "professional" version of this popular software. Rebranded as "tdg", this second incarnation of The Digital Guestbook builds on the features of the first in many ways. The most significant change is the move from a static HTML document to a fast and flexible GDBM database for the individual guestbook entries.

This move has allowed us to address some of the biggest flaws in the original program, and has enabled us to add some powerful new features that make tdg the only guestbook application you'll ever need.
  • installation: addressing one of the most troublesome aspects of the original Digital Guestbook, we have tried to make tdg installation as simple as possible. There is no longer any need to manually edit a configuration file prior to running tdg. The software runs "right out of the box", with web-based configuration for controlling the application's options (changes are applied on-the-fly). There are no paths to configure; tdg automatically adapts itself to match your server environment. Furthermore, the appearance of tdg can be completely customised to fit in with the look-and-feel of your website by editing a few document templates.
  • the GDBM database allows us to manipulate the guestbook in ways we were never able to with the original: tdg displays a user-selectable number of entries per page with pages generated dynamically; this results in the guestbook being quicker and more presentable (you never have to scroll through an interminably long document with tdg). The GDBM database is searchable, allowing us to find keywords in the guestbook.
  • guestbook maintenance is a point-and-click operation: it was never easy maintaining the guestbook with the original program. The only way to edit and/or remove records was to manually edit the HTML document that the guestbook wrote its entries to; on a popular site this was often a very large file. The procedure was further complicated by the fact that each entry could be one of two colours - this meant that if entries were deleted, all of the remaining entries would have to have their colour codes edited in order to maintain the cosmetics of the guestbook page. tdg benefits from having an administration module that allows you to edit and/or delete records with ease and all from within your web-browser. As all tdg pages are dynamically generated, the colour-scheme is properly applied regardless of any changes you make.

You can download a "zip" archive containing tdg and comprehensive documentation by clicking the link at the foot of this page.

This software is supplied "as is" and without warranty, either expressed, implied or otherwise.
